Everyone in Israel knows the eastern strawberry tree – its smooth
red bark can be seen from afar, so that it stands out from the other
woodland trees, and contrasts with its smooth green leaves. Its
blood-red trunk has given rise to many legends; most of them are
associated with killing – in Hebrew the tree’s name means “katal av”
– father killer. It flowers in white in spring and produces juicy
red fruit in fall, a favorite with animals and plants alike.
