KKL-JNF Heritage Center in Sderot
JNF Canada has adopted the KKL-JNF Heritage Center in Sderot
There's room for more partners!
Sderot, the city closest to the Gaza border, is being slated for its own KKL-JNF Heritage Center. The facility will be built to withstand direct missile strikes.
The Heritage Center will first and foremost serve as an after-school venue for informal education and enrichment
designed for high school youth from Sderot and its surroundings. The center will provide them with the necessary tools and skills for academic and personal success and a "second home" imbued with Zionist values and environmental awareness.
Due to the city's vulnerable location, the building will be fortified, protecting students and staff from rocket and mortar attacks. As well, the entire facility will be accessible to people with disabilities.
The standards of protection from missiles will be more stringent than those required by the Home Front Command: In addition to the required 20 square meters of protected space, there will be another missile-proof space on the building's second floor, 10 square meters in size. In addition, all lavatories (each approximately 52 sqm) will have concrete walls and protected windows and can also be used as missile-proof spaces. The concrete ceiling above the protected spaces will be 40 cm, double in thickness. The structural glazing curtain walls will have inner layers of tempered glass that will not shatter in the event of an explosion (or attempted break-in).
The
design of the KKL-JNF Heritage Center will be
invitingly clean and bright, with large windows
to let in natural light, colorful wall
illustrations, and open spaces, creating an
environment and ambiance unlike that of a
school. The House will be surrounded
by a courtyard for outdoor
studies and comprise learning spaces of
different sizes and relaxation areas equipped
with a variety of educational and multimedia
resources to encourage creative learning
based on the edutainment model of informal
education. The facility will be divided into
classrooms, a multipurpose hall,
meeting room, kitchenette and a
unique experiential learning hub. The
classrooms are designed to contain small
learning groups, except for one large classroom
(that can be divided into two), and a
computer lab with the latest equipment. The
multipurpose hall will be used
for workshops, lectures, performances
and film screenings. The hub is an open space
with poufs, armchairs, sofas, and video game
consoles.
Donors will receive suitably placed recognition that fits in with the design of the KKL-JNF Heritage Center (a contemporary sticker format, rather than the traditional plaque).
Project status: Construction should begin August 2022 and the structure will take an estimated 14 months till completion.
