KKL-JNF spearheads Israel's efforts to tackle the climate crisis first and foremost through its forests. They sequester 3 million tons of CO2 annually, improve air quality, serve as green lungs for the densely populated country, help to reduce surface air temperatures, and act as noise barriers, among other vital environmental benefits. The Yatir Forest alone exemplifies the ecological impact of one forest. Research has shown that the Yatir Forest, the largest planted forest in the country, situated on the edge of the Negev desert, sequesters atmospheric carbon at a rate similar to that of European temperate forests. Further efforts to solve the climate crisis include an innovation center, which KKL-JNF is presently developing, dedicated to finding solutions through new technologies and alternatives to the use of fossil fuels, such as the extensive use of solar power. In addition, KKL-JNF's informed use of water, which includes technologies to collect surface runoff and the use of treated wastewater for irrigation, means that water for domestic use is saved and Israel's agriculture is better secured in a world whose water resources are threatened by climate change. KKL-JNF shares its knowledge and know-how with other countries on issues related to the climate crisis, which includes dryland afforestation and agriculture. We participate in relevant conferences, such as the Expo Dubai and the COP, send our experts to semi-arid arid regions of the world, and host their professional delegations in Israel. |
