Nature is critical to our survival, providing us with oxygen, regulating weather patterns, pollinating crops, and producing food, feed and fiber.

KKL -JNF has planted the country's forests trees, is responsible for their management and promotes their biodiversity, combats desertification, and supports birding projects and avian and environmental research. KKL-JNF's efforts to protect the country's flora and fauna are part and parcel of its work to ensure a viable natural environment for future generations.

Manages planted and natural forests, covering an area of 120,000 hectares (300,000 acres) that contribute to climate change mitigation
Mitigates greenhouse gas emissions through its forests, which capture ~1.2 million tons of CO2 each year
Promotes biodiversity through planting diverse tree species, including those native to the region; broadleaved and coniferous; trees that give shade and those providing pollen and nectar for bees; and trees in arid and semi-arid regions that use runoff and prevent soil erosion. Tree species include: ~15 coniferous; ~40 broadleaved; ~35 eucalyptus, and ~10 acacia
Planted, cultivates, and treats orchards, mainly carob and olive: ~4,500 hectares (11,250 acres)
Cultivates and manages native woodland: ~24,000 hectares (~60,000 acres)
Manages forest areas that allow for ongoing and seasonal grazing
Supplies pollen and nectar producing tree saplings for countrywide planting: ~100,000
KKL-JNF plants trees in the desert: ~16,000 hectares (~40,000 acres)
Provides tree saplings for regional and local councils: ~300,000 annual average
Participates in research studies in forestry, ecology, aquatic environments, river restoration, sustainable agriculture, ornithology, and renewable energy: ~70 per year
Supports cutting-edge research and development technologies to address the climate crisis
Preserves flowering areas
KKL-JNF is on guard to prevent wildfires: 24/7
Rehabilitates burned forest areas; an annual average of ~600 wildfires that destroy ~1,400 hectares (~3,500 acres)
Protects Israel's forests and fights forest fires: 300 firefighters, 25 fire trucks stationed throughout the country; 14 staffed fire watchtowers
Created more than 200 forest firebreaks to prevent the spread of wildfires
Constructed ~230 water reservoirs that provide ~40% of the water used for agriculture in Israel, thereby improving the water balance and preventing the discharge of effluents into streams and other water bodies to the detriment of their restoration
Leads the country on the UN Clean Up the World Day in Israel: ~280,000 volunteers
Welcomes millions of annual holiday and festival visitors to its forests
Creates Established birding centers: ~11 (Hula Lake Park International Birdwatching Center, Kibbutz Nahsholim Kanfei Kakal (“KKL-JNF Wings”) project, HaYarkon Park Bird's Head, Nahal Alexander Vickar Birdwatching Observation Deck, the Baruch Reservoir and the Triangle of Springs, Nahal Be'er Sheva Kanfei Kakal, Ein Rimon Kanfei Kakal, Yeruham Kanfei Kakal, Arava Kibbutz Lotan Kanfei Kakal, Eilat International Birding Park
Educates the public to refrain from bringing plastic bags and containers into its forests and keep them clean
Conducts annual nature and landscape surveys in KKL-JNF forests to document their properties and improve the forestry interface
Partners in a project to preserve the ancestors of cultivated plants, hundreds of the country's wild species, constituting a genetic bank for crop species that feed humanity
Preserves springs, winter pools and stream within its jurisdiction, while creating a monitoring system to ensure their functioning, including the ability to absorb the public and provide leisure and recreation options
Implements technology to regulate runoff in its extensive forests, thus increasing groundwater penetration and reducing the risk of downstream flooding
